FAQ: Polymer clay for beginners

Hey there! I used to get asked alot on polymer clay, like what tools to get, where I get them etc. Hence, I've decided to type out this post to help out fellow crafters who are interested in polymer clay!

First off, I don't remember when I started out polymer clay, but I do remember how I came into contact with it. I wanted to make something for my friend's birthday, so I thought, 'hey, why not make something out of clay?' And so my journey with polymer clay started from there. I did plenty of research on polymer clay, Youtube and google have been very helpful ^^ . I strongly urge you to research if you're interested in this hobby! It gets slightly annoying if people keep asking questions without first doing their own research.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Alright, so let's start with the serious stuff!

1) How do you bake your clay?

Polymer clay requires baking to harden, as it is unlike air dry clay which, as its name suggests, air dry. I bought my second hand toaster oven at a shop called 'cash converters'.

So I clay-ed again (:

Whooohooo~ The dreaded Mid-Semester Tests are finally OVER and I found time last week to clay! As usual, I didn't have any idea of what to make, just opened my craft cupboard and started digging through stuff to make. I do however, realised that I like to make donuts ALOT. Even though I haven't eaten a single donut in real life for a few years now. It seems like every time I clay, a mandatory donut is necessary. So let the onslaught of photos begin!

Presenting to you Sebastian and the christmas cookies! "Would you like a piece of cookie to enjoy with your afternoon tea, Ojosama?"

Each cookie measures less than 1cm

Making a mold with Oyumaru [Tutorial]

Was browsing around and I realised there ain't that many tutorials on making molds for polymer clay use online! So while I was shopping at Daiso (a Japanese dollar store), I picked up some Oyumaru and decided to make a tutorial out of it.

Basically, Oyumaru is a molding material which is reusable and very affordable as well! All you have to do is just place it in hot water and it will soften and become pliable. Easy peasy.

Tadah~~
I have yet to try the mold I made, but once I have the time to try it, I'll update this post again! For those who cannot afford to buy those expensive mold maker, do try out this cheaper alternative! It is definitely a cheaper and easier method of making molds. Besides, if you make a mistake, just place the oyumaru in hot water again and it'll be mold-able again. ^_^

On a side note, remember in my last post I said I wanted a nendoroid? Well, I finally got one!! *excited mode*

Isn't he just adorable?? Introducing Sebby-chan!! He's a character from the anime "Kuroshitsuji' Or "Black Butler". From now on, he will be helping me model all of my clay food! Hehehe :D

Hope y'all benefited from this post!

Hurray! Claying again after a long time~

Finally able to clay after so long! I wouldn't say I was very inspired, just went ahead and started claying, haha. I'll let the pictures do the talking! 10c coin pictured for scale. Click on any of the pictures to enlarge.

Mickey mouse pancake! Inspired by Re-ment

So I made a bunch of donuts off hand, I just topped them with whatever I had in hand. Each of the donuts are about 8mm at its widest, and I think thats a perfect size for earrings. May consider putting them in the shop, because I've tried selling donut earrings before and they were a hit!

Heart shaped cookies dipped in chocolate. 9mm at its widest. Personally I think these would look really cute as earrings too. ^_^

An impromptu chocolate tart that I simply decorated with chopped up brown clay (which are acting as chocolate flakes). I often end up making random things or things that I didn't intend to make in the first place, hahaha.  This tart measures 13mm at its widest, and its photographed with my Sylvanian Families furniture set I got about a year back.

Iced Gems! The real deal.
I was scrolling through Instagram, when I chanced upon a picture of Iced Gems!! I adored these as a kid, and actually I still really like them even till now. So I decided to get to work and made these babies. I made mine slightly different though, gave it a more "high class" look. I made the bases kinda like tart/cupcakey instead of the original biscuit base. Made two versions, a bigger and a smaller one. The bigger ones measures about 5mm at its base and the smaller ones 3mm. However, while I was happily shooting 'em, I accidentally dropped one and have since been unable to locate it. Pretty sad right? Thank god I managed a group shot before I lost one of them.

So that was all I've made, and I'm not sure if anyone's actually reading this blog at all, but I decided I'm going to stop neglecting this blog! (see I even made an effort to change the header picture *inserts goofy grin*) At times I wished I had something to model the food I make.. I want a nendoroid so badly!! *cries*

Wow! Just realised it has been more than 3 months since my last post...
-but it's not like i have lot's of readers..so i guess it's fine.. :P-

But I'm back with some craft updates! This time it's polymer clay again~

So I got a couple of custom orders from my shop, so while I've been working on those orders, I also made some extra stuff!! I was pretty excited to touch clay, as I've been so caught up with school I had no time for clay! So here are some pictures...

Frozen Yogurts!
Strawberry yogurt with fruit slices!
Yogurt topped with fruity pebbles!!
Personally, I don't like frozen yogurts that much, but i really like the appearance, so i went ahead and made some! Will be up for sale in the shop when I'm feeling less lazy (hehe)

Thanks for taking time to read this!

Nope, not clay this time.

Yep, this post is totally polymer clay unrelated. :)

About a month ago, i purchased this Bus felt tissue holder kit from Daiso, and immediately thought of making it for my little brother who's mad about vehicles. But then, I never really had time to complete it until recently (what's with Chinese new year and completing other stuff) and so here's the completed bus!

I filled it up with tissue already~
I was really glad that my brother loved it. Hehe..

In the mean time, I was also trying to finish up this old cross stitch design I started years ago but never completed...
